The English grammar is very important as it is one of the most commonly used grammar worldwide. It is also regarded as an international language which makes it one of the most neutral languages used in international conferences, events ,seminars that bring together people of different nationalities together.
The success of this grammar can be attributed back to the distinct elements that build up the final product. One may look at one conversing in English grammar and think its very simple but in real sense the normal English sentence is made up of different elements often labelled as parts of speech that are combined with respect to each other in a bid to create a sentence that makes sense. This is the basis for communication using the English grammar.
One of the several parts of speech are the verbs. These are described as doing words as they simply talk about actions that have been done. They are very important since most English sentences involve an action being done.
However the word verb is general as these actions vary largely with the type of setting and the role the action plays with respect to the other parts of speech in the sentence. This therefore breaks down the verb to other categories that are classified according to their manipulation in a sentence.
One type of verb that we'll put under discussion is the auxiliary verb. This type of verb simply adds more grammatical meaning to the clauses in which they happen to be in.These verbs generally express tense, aspect ,emphasis, voice among other elements when they are used. In most cases if not all these verbs usually accompany a main verb.
These verbs are also known as helping verbs and they generally consist of primary verbs and modal verbs.Examples of primary verbs are be,have ,do while examples of modal verbs are can, could, will, might, must among others. However the most common forms of auxiliary verbs are be,have and do.These three common auxiliary verbs each takes different forms for instance the different forms of be include am,is,are, was, were among others.
These verbs have a few functions and one of them is that they mostly combine with other verbs to bring out the aspect of tense. In the sentence "Mary is cooking fish",it is evident that two verbs have been combined to bring out the tense.'Is' is the auxiliary verb while 'cooking' is the main verb. They have been combined to form the clause 'is cooking' which clearly shows that the action is in the present continuous tense.
However that is not always the case as when these auxiliary verbs are on their own they act like main verbs in a sentence. For example in the sentence "You have good looks" ,have is an auxiliary verb that functions as the main verb in the sentence.
Auxiliary verbs can also be used to show emphasis. For example in the sentence "I do like you" the auxiliary verb do has been used to emphasize the extend of the liking.
Auxiliary verbs can be identified due to the fact that they allow the type of inversions used to form questions.
